ABSTRACT:
Purpose- The purpose of present study is to explore the anti-depressant activity of ethanolic extract of avena sativa leaves using albino mice. A common mental illness that affects 21% of people worldwide is depression. A number of adverse effects, such as heart toxicity, hypopiesia, sexual dysfunction, body weight gain and sleep disorders, can be brought on by currently used medications. The therapeutic effects of natural products on mental diseases have garnered increasing attention during the past ten years. Avena sativa was investigation for antidepressant activity. Antidepressant activity of ethanolic extract of Avena sativa (EEAS) was investigated by using Forced swimming test (FST) and Tail suspension test (TST) models. Imipramine was used as reference standards. It has been observed from our study that both the EEAS at higher concentration showed significant (p<0.01) reduction in immobility in tail suspension and forced swim model of depression comparable to Imipramine. However further study is needed to understand mechanism of action and to identify active component responsible for antidepressant like activity
