ABSTRACT:
Neolamarkia cadamba (syn. Anthocephalus cadamba) is a medium to large deciduous tree from the Rubiaceae family, widely distributed across India, Southeast Asia, and the Malaysian archipelago. Revered in Ayurveda and deeply rooted in Indian mythology and history, the tree has been used traditionally for its therapeutic properties. Different parts of the plant—including bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, and roots—are employed in treating a range of ailments such as fever, inflammation, digestive disorders, wounds, ulcers, and metabolic conditions like diabetes. Modern research supports its pharmacological activities, highlighting its antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, diuretic, and laxative effects. The presence of various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes, and phenolic acids underlies these activities. The continued exploration of N. cadamba’s medicinal potential is essential for validating and expanding its use in both traditional and modern healthcare systems.
