ABSTRACT:
In recent years, cobalt oxide nanoparticles (CoONPs) have drawn significant attention due to their unique physical, chemical, and optical properties. In this work, we report a simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly method to synthesize CoONPs using microwave irradiation and aqueous extract of radish leaves (Raphanus sativus). The leaf extract acts as both a reducing agent and a stabilizer, eliminating the need for toxic chemicals. The formation of CoONPs was confirmed by a color change to dark brown and further characterized using UV-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles are mostly spherical with an average diameter of 8±2 nm. The synthesized nanoparticles demonstrated excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of Methylene Blue (MB), Congo Red (CR), and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The reaction kinetics followed a pseudo-first-order model, with rate constants calculated as 0.332min?¹ (MB), 0.443min?¹ (CR), and 0.330min?¹ (4-NP). These findings suggest that radish leaf extract-mediated CoONPs are promising candidates for the eco-friendly treatment of dye-contaminated industrial wastewater.
