ABSTRACT:
Dermatophytosis, or ringworm, is one of the most common fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails. It is usually treated with antifungal creams or oral drugs, but in recent years a new species, Trichophyton indotineae, has become a major concern. First identified in India, this fungus spreads quickly, causes stubborn infections, and shows resistance to many standard antifungal drugs, especially terbinafine. Infections caused by T. indotineae have now been reported worldwide, making it an emerging public health challenge. This review explains the rise of T. indotineae, its drug-resistance mechanisms, treatment options, and the global impact of its spread. It also highlights the gaps in current knowledge and explores possible future strategies for managing these difficult infections.
